Brazing Symbols and Filled Metals in Drawings

Brazing Processes and Reference Numbers

According to International Standard ISO 4063, brazing processes are classified with the following reference numbers:

  • 911: Infrared brazing

  • 912: Flame brazing, torch brazing

  • 916: Induction brazing

  • 918: Resistance brazing

  • 919: Diffusion brazing

  • 921: Oven brazing

  • 922: Vacuum brazing

  • 923: Immersion brazing

  • 924: Salt bath brazing

Apart from these, there may be other brazing operations not specified in ISO 4063.

Also these:

  • Torch Brazing (TB)

  • Oven Brazing (FB)

  • Induction Brazing (IB)

  • Immersion Brazing (DB)

  • Resistance Brazing (RB)

It can also be shown as .

Product Types and Conditions

Brazing filler metals come in a variety of forms, but not all of them are available in every type. For example, it can be found as sticks, wire, foil or powder. It is also available as a component of some brazing pastes or can be found coated on one or both sides of the alloy sheet, especially in aluminum brazing filler metals. The rods may be completely or partially covered with fluid.

Product Dimensions and Condition

While preferred diameters for rods generally range from 1 mm to 5 mm, there is no set diameter for wire. The surfaces must be free of contamination and, if welded, the weld must not obstruct the flow of the joined parts.

Determination of Filling Metals

Filling metals used for brazing have a specific coding system according to the ISO 17672 standard. For example, where an aluminum filler metal contains 11% to 13% silicon in accordance with ISO 17672, the designation of this metal may be as follows:

  • Filler metal ISO 17672-Al 112

  • Filler metal ISO 17672-B-Al88Si-575/585

Impressions not recommended in Brazing display

Seam Height Symbol: The seam height symbol is generally used in welding processes and indicates the height of the weld seam. However, the use of this symbol in brazing operations is not recommended because brazing is generally used to join thinner and more sensitive parts than welding processes. Therefore, instead of specifying the seam height in brazing processes, other parameters, such as the properties of the filling metal, are more important.

Corner Welding Symbol : The corner welding symbol indicates the joining of corners in welding processes. However, the use of the fillet weld symbol in brazing operations is not recommended because brazing is generally preferred for joining edges or surfaces of metal parts. Therefore, instead of using the fillet weld symbol in brazing operations, a suitable symbol should be chosen, for example the edge weld symbol.
